Sen. McKoon targets abortion access for vulnerable youth

It’s an election year, so Republicans in Georgia want to make sure they shore up their conservative cred in advance of the primaries on May 22 and the general election on November 6. And what better target to accomplish this than by targeting abortion access? Anti-choice policy makers know they cannot outright make abortion illegal, given that seven in ten Americans oppose policies to overturn Roe v. Wade. So instead, they try to pass laws

Celebrating 45 years of Roe v. Wade

Today, Jan. 22, marks the the 45th anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. In the years since the ruling, opponents have worked tirelessly to push abortion care out of reach by any means necessary; and their new, anti-abortion allies in the White House have reinvigorated the anti-abortion movement. Rosie Jiménez was one of the first victims of the relentless anti-abortion politicking that the right so self-righteously promotes. The Hyde Amendment, passed in

The bill, H.R. 36, mirrors a

In a moving piece, What Happens When You Can’t Afford an Abortion?, the author highlights the barriers many low-income pregnant folks face when trying to get an abortion and the work ARC-Southeast does to help folks get access to the care they need. Phoning an abortion clinic is

“Pro life” hypocrisy in action

National Right to Life is one of the backers of the push to repeal Obamacare. Things shouldn’t shock me anymore, but this does. When National Right to Life and other anti-choice groups talk about their values — ones that many people find very appealing — they talk about “promoting respect for the worth and dignity of every individual human being.” The state affiliate of NRTL, the Georgia Life Alliance, even states in their mission statement,

Ga. Supreme Court upholds abortion ban ruling

A 2012 law banning abortion after 20 weeks is about to go into effect after the Georgia Supreme Court upheld the dismissal of the lawsuit on a technicality: you can’t sue the government without their permission, under sovereign immunity laws. This has really broad implications for lawmaking in Georgia. If the legislature passes an unconstitutional law, sovereign immunity limits the ability of stakeholders to sue and have the law overturned. Given just how frequently laws
