2018 Legislative Session

Why are conservatives afraid of more voters?

Yesterday, the Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill that would carve out a new city, called Eagle’s Landing, from the existing city of Stockbridge, along racial lines. The bill was amended slightly from the Senate’s version, so now it’s headed back to the Senate for another vote. So far, it seems the vote has been split on party lines — it’s clear that Republicans in the state legislature are determined to carve out a

Race to GOP primaries becoming race to bottom

Yikes! The Republican gubernatorial hopefuls are on a fast-paced race to the bottom. A (somewhat interchangeable) group of white men have been desperately trying to reassure the public that they are, in fact, the MOST racist, MOST anti-abortion, MOST anti-immigrant candidate of the whole lot. Where to begin in listing off the litany of disturbing choices these candidates have made? To start with, all of the top GOP candidates have made public pledges to support

Ga. conservatives try to chip away at voting rights

Georgia conservatives have long displayed a dangerous pattern of chipping away at the rights of Georgians. They’ve worked to strip away LGBTQ rights through a number of measures and have continuously attacked women’s access to abortion. But they haven’t stopped there — they’re actively working to chip away our voting rights as well. They know that more voters means less power for conservatives. Conservatives have pushed strict voter I.D. laws, which disproportionately targets students, low-income

Cagle is flying high on the taxpayer dime

A WSB-TV investigation has revealed that Lt. Governor Casey Cagle has grievously misused taxpayer money. In the last five years, Casey Cagle has taken more 200 separate flights at a cost of $250,000 to the taxpayers. Many of these trips were essentially shuttling him around the state — sometimes multiple trips in a single day — with 37 of those trips originating in Cagle’s hometown of Gainesville. He racked up a bill of a quarter of

Sen. David Shafer accused of sexual harassment in the courtroom

Another Ga. Republican lawmaker is being sued for sexual harassment in the courtroom. Sen. David Shafer, who is also a leading Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, is referring to the accusation that he sexually harassed a veteran lobbyist as “politics, not the truth.” The lobbyist making the accusation, a 20-year Capitol veteran, said Shafer retaliated against her after she rejected his advances and harassed her after helping her get a bill passed in 2011. Ehrhart is leaving office, but another Ehrhart maybe replacing him

Rep. Earl Ehrhart recently announced that he’s retiring and progressives across the state are counting down the days. For 30 years, Ehrhart has used his position to promote the most destructive conservative policies. In recent years he’s championed legislation that attacks rape survivors while protecting those accused of rape. He’s targeted members of the LGBTQ community, students, immigrants and women. He’s threatened to pull funding for universities that didn’t bow to his backwards policies. Early
