Push extremists like Tommy Benton out of office

Georgians have seen too many racists and extremist conservatives making decisions for our state. State Rep. Tommy Benton has repeatedly been in the spotlight for his racism, and yet he was appointed to the Civics Committee, a group tasked with “furthering Georgia’s students’ civic literacy.” This position would have allowed Benton, a known KKK defender, to make recommendations to the state Board of Education on how and what to teach our students. Racist Gwinnett County commissioner files lawsuit against Ethics Board

Gwinnett County commissioner Tommy Hunter is now suing the Ethics Board, shortly before they found him in violation of the county’s ethics code. Hunter got into hot water earlier this year when he called Congressman John Lewis a “racist pig,” and described Democrats as “demonrats” and “libtards.” A dedicated group went to every, single commissioners meeting to protest his statements and pressure him to resign for making blatantly racist comments. Ultimately an ethics violation was filed

Tommy Hunter (still) needs to go

The ethics investigation around Tommy Hunter’s racist remarks earlier this year will begin in earnest at the end of this month, with the committee tasked with conducting the investigation reporting they will subpoena Hunter. Hunter — who has thus far declined to participate in the process — will face, at most, a censure or a written reprimand. Residents have attended every Gwinnett County Commission meeting to register their disapproval of his comments and ask for

Nothing to celebrate with Perdue appointment

The Senate just confirmed Georgia’s own Sonny Perdue as the Dept. of Agriculture Secretary. But unfortunately there isn’t much to celebrate. Perdue’s history aligns him with Donald Trump’s disastrous policy choices. Perdue’s history includes killing forest conservation programs, engaging in tax evasion and promoting anti-immigrant policies predating Trump’s own brand of xenophobia. Neill Herring, a Gold Dome stalwart and lobbyist for the Sierra Club in Georgia, expressed his concern that Perdue’s confirmation will lead the

Tom Price’s insider trading, ethics complaints

I really think I picked the wrong career. If you don’t mind skirting (or straight up ignoring) ethics rules you can make some nice money as a politician. Tom Price, Judson Hill and Karen Handel are all perfect examples of this. Tom Price, the congressman turned Health and Human Services Secretary from Georgia, continues to affirm his belief that he did nothing unethical, even as reports continue to surface about just how much money he

2017 Legislative Session

Wrapping up the 2017 legislative session

Georgia’s Legislature adjourned for good last week, just in time for the Masters Tournament (as always). While the at-times tumultuous session was set to end on Thursday, the gavels didn’t come down officially until early Friday morning, capping off 40 days of the most intriguing political theater in recent memory. Here’s what happened: Rigged Maps: House Bill 515, sponsored by disgraced former judge Johnnie Caldwell (WATCH Samantha Bee’s piece on Caldwell here), went down in
