The bill to establish Eagles Landing is headed for Gov. Deal’s desk, and this may be our last chance to demand that he veto this legislation.
The bill would carve out a new city called Eagles Landing from the existing city of Stockbridge, along racial lines. Ultimately, the new city — named after local country club Eagle’s Landing — would deliver a huge hit to minority voters by significantly and intentionally diluting their voting power.
Let’s put a stop to this now. Call Gov. Deal at 404-656-1776 and tell him to veto the Eagles Landing bill.
This bill could also threaten Georgia’s economy, experts in the municipal bond market say.
If Eagles Landing becomes a city, experts fear the cost of projects like building fire stations or establishing new water treatment facilities could skyrocket across Georgia.
“Every city in Georgia would be at risk and put on credit watch by the credit-rating agencies … because every city would be at risk for having part of their territory taking away by a new jurisdiction,” said Bart Hildreth, an expert on municipal bonds in Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.
That could force municipalities across Georgia to raise taxes and downsize or even eliminate projects altogether if they have communities that suddenly want to secede.
The Eagles Landing bill is all-around bad legislation, and Deal needs to hear from us before it’s too late.
Call Deal TODAY at 404-656-1776 and tell him to veto the Eagles Landing bill. This could be our last chance to raise our voices against this disastrous bill.
