Gov. Deal or Mayor Reed?

If we told you Gov. Deal wants to appoint a failed politician who has been disbarred by the State Bar of Georgia for depositing $30,000 intended for an injured child into his own coffers, there is no doubt you would know this is wrong.

Well, it’s just as wrong when Mayor Kasim Reed is the one backing such a terrible appointment.

On Monday, the Atlanta City Council will vote on the appointment of Lamar Willis to the Fulton County/City of Atlanta Land Bank Authority.

This is expected to be a close vote, so your voice will make a difference.

Sign and share the petition: Tell Mayor Reed to withdraw his appointment of Lamar Willis

Or, even better, talk to your city council members.

These four council members are the key votes to block this appointment:

Send an email to these City Council members right now to tell them to block the appointment of Lamar Willis. He has not earned a position of public trust and Atlanta’s voters have already rejected him.

People often complain about how our elected officials govern, but feel there is nothing they can do to change things.

By acting today, we can make real difference for the City of Atlanta.

Mr. Willis blames the missing $30,000 on a “tough period” in his life. But the truth is the missing money was just one of many ethics violations he’s racked up over the years.

While a city councilman, Mr. Willis used city employees, offices, phones and printers to run his “foundation,” which proved to be a personal income source for him.

A Secretary of State investigation into Willis’ charity revealed that the former politician deposited nearly $50,000 in donations into his personal and campaign accounts.

We’re not sure why Mayor Reed is backing Mr. Willis after the voters in his district rejected him.

But we are sure the appointment is wrong for Atlanta taxpayers.

If we expect our government to work for all of us, it must work at every level. Mayor Reed and the City of Atlanta should lead by example to show that progressive values aren’t conditional on political parties. Sign and share the petition.
