With an FBI and federal grand jury investigation underway, Gov. Nathan Deal’s team is in full-blown panic mode. Instead of coming clean, they’re blaming Better Georgia for exposing the multiple growing scandals that threaten the governor’s bid for re-election in 2014. Make no mistake: Gov. Deal and his corporate-funded rightwing allies will not give up without a fight, and they’re willing to do almost anything to shut down the organization we’ve built together. That’s why as Chair of Better Georgia, I ask that you join me today by making a contribution of $8 or more to make sure that we are ready for the fight ahead. We’ve set the ambitious goal of raising $10,000 this week. The money we raise through this effort will directly fund our efforts to force Gov. Deal to take responsibility for his actions. Will you give today? There’s never been a time when your contribution could make more of a difference. Less than 24 hours after Gov. Deal admitted for the first time that his 2010 campaign finances are at the center of an FBI criminal probe, his lawyer, Randy Evans — in a hastily written email to the Georgia Republican Party — scrambled to reassure the governor’s most loyal partisan supporters. In this email, Randy Evans says “Governor Nathan Deal is the most ethical, honest, and transparent government official that I have ever had the pleasure of representing.” He also attacked Better Georgia for telling you the truth. One thing is crystal clear: We have an unprecedented opportunity to take control from Georgia’s conservative super majority, but we must act swiftly to respond to every single one of their lies. Gov. Deal is fighting for his political life, and he knows it. Gov. Deal and his lawyer despise Better Georgia. They believe that we’re to blame for the governor’s troubles, and they’re determined to do whatever it takes to stop us from telling you the truth. They’re trying to destroy Better Georgia and the attacks have already started. The Deal team has millions of dollars to use in this campaign. But we’re not afraid because we have you. Because we can’t let them win, today, I’m going to be the first to give. Will you join me and help Better Georgia reach our goal of raising $10,000 this week to hold Gov. Deal and his team accountable? We’ve already proven that we’re strong and effective. We need your support now because this is the fight you’ve wanted for a decade. We won’t wait to get started. We have to prepare to win progressive victories in 2014, and together, we can. Sincerely, Board Chair Better Georgia
