State Sen. Buddy Carter’s HOPE solution: ‘look at it’

The Georgia HOPE Scholarship is in crisis. Today’s high school freshmen will not see the HOPE Scholarship as we know it.

You might think this might be a time for Georgia’s lawmakers to show some urgency. They must be frantically trying to find a solution. Sadly, that’s apparently not the case.

Better Georgia Executive Director Bryan Long debated State Sen. Buddy Carter on live TV this morning about the best way to save the HOPE Scholarship.

As the chairman of the Senate Higher Education Committee, Sen. Carter’s solution is to ‘look at it’ and talk to his lobbyist friends at the Gold Dome.

Better Georgia took a different approach. Instead of huddling with lobbyists, we suggest that Sen. Carter simply listen to Georgia voters who already have the solution: place a family income cap on recipients of the scholarship. (Survey: Georgia Supports Need-Based HOPE Scholarships)

Here’s the full debate, which was broadcast by 11Alive in metro Atlanta earlier today. The fun part starts 35 seconds into the video:
