Nathan Deal’s “Gift” to Georgia’s Students: Huge Cuts to HOPE Scholarship

In 2011, mere months after he was elected, Gov. Deal announced he was giving “a gift to future generations of Georgia’s outstanding students”: he was about to slash the budget for the HOPE scholarship just as many low-income families needed help the most. Since those cuts, the number of HOPE recipients has fallen from 256,000 students in 2010-11 to fewer than 160,000 students this year. In addition, while the scholarship used to cover the full

Gov. Deal approves of this message. But you paid for it.

Whether he is preparing to testify in court about an alleged cover-up of his campaign’s finance violations, or putting $76 million dollars in federal funding at risk, or collecting $20,000 per month rent from one of Georgia’s largest corporate tax debtors, Gov.

Bringing HOPE back to Georgia students

Earlier this week, State Senator Jason Carter outlined a series of reform proposals that would ultimately help restore HOPE scholarships, provide additional assistance for those seeking education degrees and restore funding for National Board Certified teachers. The biggest of those proposals: restoring HOPE to its former glory. Since 2011, the HOPE scholarship program has taken it on the nose. The incredible work Gov. Zell Miller spearheaded 20 years ago has been undone and fewer students
