Tell Gov. Deal to veto Eagles Landing bill

The bill to establish Eagles Landing is headed for Gov. Deal’s desk, and this may be our last chance to demand that he veto this legislation. The bill would carve out a new city called Eagles Landing from the existing city of Stockbridge, along racial lines. Ultimately, the new city — named after local country club Eagle’s Landing — would deliver a huge hit to minority voters by significantly and intentionally diluting their voting power. Let’s

Education

Ga. students are riding buses from the ’80s due to lack of funding

It’s no secret that Gov. Nathan Deal has chronically under-funded Georgia public education for the majority of his time in office. Teachers are underpaid, arts and music programs were cut and until very recently, some schools couldn’t afford to stay open for the full school year. Transportation to and from school is no exception to the gross undervaluation of our schools by conservative lawmakers. A number of school systems are still not receiving the resources

Bills to watch in Georgia: Gun control, anti-LGBT adoption and more

This comes after a recent poll from the AJC that revealed an incredible 77 percent of Georgians support the cultivation of medical marijuana in our state. While Deal drags his feet on medical marijuana legislation,

Georgians want increased access to medical marijuana

Georgians want increased access to medical marijuana. A new AJC poll shows that more Georgians than ever, 77 percent to be exact, support changing state laws to allow harvesting and distribution of medical marijuana. Under a 2015 law, licensed patients can possess up 20 ounces of cannabis oil to treat certain forms of 14 approved illnesses, including AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. More than 2,500 patients are currently on the registry. But

Hide and Seek with Sen. Bill Heath

Elected officials in Georgia on far too many occasions say and do outrageous things, sometimes with no consequence. But one state Sen. Bill Heath not only sent a condescending email to thousands of concerned Georgians, he hid from a reporter when she approached him to ask about his email. He literally ducked into the nearest office and hid behind a printer. He was willing to send an email to taxpayers, describing petition signing as “childish
