Progressive surge in Georgia!

September 11, 2018 By Better Georgia Staff Leave a Comment

The U.S. is experiencing a progressive surge, especially in the South. In Texas, Florida and right here in Georgia, where Abrams and Kemp are locked in a dead heat, progressive voters and candidates are energized as never before. According to a recent AJC/Channel 2 poll, progressive Stacey Abrams and Georgia’s unfit Sec. of State Brian Kemp are tied at about 45 percent each.

Since before beginning his campaign for governor, Brian Kemp has been kissing up to Trump, in search of what he thought would be a key endorsement. Kemp got the nod and it was a key endorsement — in the primary.

But Trump’s approval ratings among Georgia voters in general continue to decline. According to the same poll, 42 percent of Georgia voters approve of Trump, while 51 percent disapprove. Contrasting these numbers with the 2016 presidential election — where Trump received 51 percent of Georgia’s votes, and it’s clear to see that Georgians are jumping off the sinking Trump ship in droves. Georgians know that Kemp would be a rubber stamp for the embattled commander-in-chief and may finally be fed up with the corruption, divisiveness and and hatred.

The AJC/Channel 2 poll also illustrates a sharp gender divide. The survey showed that 49 percent of female respondents plan on supporting Abrams, compared with only 38 percent saying they plan to support Kemp. The male responses, however, were the exact opposite, with about fifty percent planning to support Kemp.

The gender divide extends to Trump’s approval rating as well. Even when compared to other Republican presidents, Trump’s female approval rating is quite low. Only 35 percent of female survey respondents in Georgia said they approve of Trump.

Women are also running for office in Georgia in unprecedented numbers this year. Women will make the difference in this election — as voters and candidates.

But it’s important to keep in mind, Georgia still has a large undecided population. We need to use these last eight weeks leading up to the election to get involved and make sure that our undecided family, friends and neighbors understand what’s at stake here. We’re so close to electing a progressive governor, but we’re not there yet.
