The results are in — Jon Ossoff finished first in the special election.
Though he barely missed the 50 percent mark to win outright, we sent a message last night.
During this historic election, Georgians rallied around Ossoff to show the whole country that progressives are ready to stand up and push back against the forces of Trump.
Last night’s results were a huge victory for the volunteers, voters and donors that supported Ossoff. The message rings loud and clear: “Republicans were served another reminder of President Donald Trump’s unpopularity.”
In fact, Better Georgia livestreamed the Election Night Event in Atlanta on Facebook while we waited for the results to come in, and the online event reached more than 230,000 progressives who tuned in to show their support for Ossoff and their resistance to Trump.
The room at the Ossoff event in Atlanta sizzled with energy, enthusiasm and potential.
And that was just the force in one room — more than 90,000 people across the 6th district voted for Ossoff and for a more progressive Georgia.
In a field of 18 candidates, Ossoff earned 48.1 percent of the vote — over 28 percent higher than his nearest rival — and with this first-place finish, he made history.
“There is no doubt that this is already a victory for the ages,” Ossoff said late Tuesday night.
“That no matter what the outcome is tonight — whether we take it all or whether we fight on — we have survived the odds. We have shattered expectations. We are changing the world. And your voices are going to ring out across this state and across this country.”
We made history last night — now let’s make sure our voices are heard again.
We can continue supporting Ossoff as he gears up to face off with Trump-supported Republican Karen Handel in June. Let’s finish the race.
