Jon Ossoff continues to rock the boat in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District race. He’s coming in so strong, that his Republican adversaries see him as one big threat: “His party is from the Dark Side — Darth Vader,” said Bruce LeVell, a pro-Trump candidate.
This race is no small matter. Ossoff’s victory would be historic — his district has been red since Jimmy Carter’s presidency. Newt Gingrich, Johnny Isakson and Tom Price have all cycled through this position on their own unfortunate rise. But the district is changing so rapidly that conservatives are really unnerved by a smart, principled, experienced progressive candidate who is polling well and has raised a lot of money.
Formerly a Congressional aide, Ossoff dove into the congressional race in January with the endorsements of U.S. Reps. John Lewis and Hank Johnson. Since then, Ossoff and his campaign have raised more than $3 million in 10 weeks.
Despite the attacks on Ossoff, Republicans can’t hide their fear of his success. The GOP has become increasingly concerned that their own candidates are fighting amongst each other for their share of the same voters.
“If we have 65 percent of the GOP vote and spread it out over 11 candidates — do the math,” said Michael Fitzgerald, the district’s GOP chairman, to Republicans at a recent forum.
Between their own fractured party and the overwhelming support for Ossoff, it’s not looking so good for Republicans in the 6th District. GOP strategist Chip Lake chimed in as well.
“We’ve now almost given him a spot in the runoff. A month out, everyone is fighting for that other spot,” Lake said.
As the election gets closer, it’s clear that Ossoff is on track to perform really well in this race. His popularity is a testament to not just the views of voters in the 6th District, but to those across the state and country. Progressive voters are active, passionate and fighting back against Trump’s reign.
“Whether or not Ossoff wins, this should be a wake-up call to the Republicans nationally about how energized the Democratic base is against this president,” Lake said.
