Trump attacks civil rights icon John Lewis, city of Atlanta

On the weekend of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, President-elect Donald Trump insulted the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement and one of its founding fathers, Congressman John Lewis.

Congressman Lewis is, of course, one of the most well-respected elected officials in the country, earning his place in history as a civil rights legend who survived a brutal police beating in Selma which left him with a cracked skull. He now represents the hometown of his confidant and mentor, Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Congressman’s district encompasses much of Atlanta, which is home to several world-class institutions and Fortune 500 companies.

Trump’s ill-advised tweet was in response to Lewis’ comment that Trump was “not a legitimate president,” which some Georgia GOP politicians used to defend the President-elect.

Trump, of course, famously challenged the legitimacy of President Obama for years by repeatedly questioning his birthplace.
