Unfortunately, but not quite unsurprisingly, Trump has nominated U.S. Rep. Tom Price to oversee the health and essential human services for all Americans. However, if Georgia’s health and human services is any kind of indication of what will be coming, it will be disastrous.
Price has been behind efforts to dismantle Obamacare pretty much since it’s inception and would like to replace it with a plan he calls “A Better Way.” However, in states like Georgia where, even under Obamacare almost 20 percent of adults are still uninsured, A Better Way is only better for conservative states looking to dump their most at-risk residents.
Regardless of his plans for Obamacare, as an orthopedic surgeon, Price is a member of the American Physicians and Surgeons, an organization that has long been at odds with mainstream medicine.
Some of the scientifically discredited theories the American Physicians and Surgeons have endorsed include abortions causing breast cancer, vaccines causing serious disabilities, and illegal immigrants carrying leprosy. Although the group claims to be a nonpartisan professional organization, the executive director Jane Orient says, “We have had more contact with (Rep. Price) than most other members…Because he has been on our side and he has been a physician.”
Someone who wants to take health insurance away from the most at-risk Americans should not be in charge of serving them. Someone who associates with organizations that endorse scientifically discredited theories should not be in charge of medical policy.
