In the final moments of the 2016 legislative session, Gov. Deal vetoed the disastrous ‘Campus Carry’ bill, which would have legalized guns in classrooms, libraries, daycares and just about everywhere else on Georgia’s college campuses.
Today, Georgia progressives can celebrate another huge victory.
The Campus Carry bill was almost universally unpopular with Georgia students, parents, professors, university presidents and campus police, but conservatives, in their ongoing quest to appease the powerful gun lobby, which spends tens of millions of dollars per year on lobbying, ignored their constituents’ opposition to the bill and sent it to Gov. Deal’s desk.
Fortunately, thousands of you signed Better Georgia’s petition and hundreds of you made phone calls asking the governor to veto the legislation. Progressive organizations like Everytown for Gun Safety and OutCry Georgia were integral in the fight against guns on campus and proved, once again, that when Georgia’s progressive community comes together to stand up for what we know is right, we can accomplish anything.
Make no mistake: the big-money interests and Georgia’s out-of-touch conservative supermajority will continue pushing backwards, dangerous legislation. It’s up to us to fight back together.
