Neo-Confederate bills killed; Ralston condemns ‘rewriting or reinterpreting the past’

Just minutes ago, Rep. Tommy Benton pulled every single one of his neo-Confederate bills from consideration.

And House Speaker David Ralston finally spoke out on Rep. Benton’s defense of the Ku Klux Klan. Notably, Speaker Ralston said, “the business of the General Assembly isn’t in rewriting or reinterpreting the past, but rather to focus on improving Georgia’s future.”

AJC: Rep. Benton withdraws legislation following ‘negative perception’

Both of these victories happened because of you.

It was clear from the beginning that Speaker Ralston wanted to ignore Rep. Benton’s comments, but you wouldn’t let him.

With your help, we sent phone calls from 97 constituents to Speaker Ralston’s office to protest Rep. Benton’s defense of the Klan. We sent 54 more calls to Rep. Mike Cheokas’ office from his own district.

More than 2,600 of you signed a petition that went directly to Ralston.

It’s a shame that we even need to engage in this kind of fight in 2016, but we’re glad that we’re able to win it.

Rep. Benton will keep his chairmanship, for now, but the session is far from over.

Stay with us as we continue our fight for progress in Georgia.
