This Friday, millions of Georgians will get up early and brave long lines for the incredible deals retailers offer on Black Friday. For many families, Black Friday shopping is a festive, fun tradition that helps lighten the load on the family budget during the holiday season.
But thanks to Georgia’s government, this year, we won’t be able to use our credit cards on Black Friday without worrying about whether our personal information — including our Social Security number — has fallen into the wrong hands.
Why? Because last week Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp acknowledged that over a month ago, his office illegally disclosed the Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers and other private information of more than six million registered voters.
If you are a Georgia voter, multiple organizations — including Georgia Gun Owners Magazine, RedState.org and the neo-confederate group The Southern Party of Georgia — received your personal data.
This massive data breach impacts ALL registered voters in the State of Georgia.
Until a lawsuit was filed last week, Secretary Kemp had not even informed the millions impacted by this data leak. Now, he has merely posted a notice on his website – a notice most people will never see.
What’s more, our state government has done NOTHING to protect the millions of Georgians whose private information was distributed.
And it gets worse.
On Friday, Secretary Kemp has acknowledged that this is not the first time his office has illegally released the personal information of Georgia voters. A similar breach happened in 2012, but Kemp has yet to say exactly which voters — and how many — were impacted.
Think for a moment about what someone who is up to no good could do with your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and driver’s license number. Then, ask yourself whether Secretary Kemp, whose office has illegally released this data, not once, but twice, should get to keep his job.
We think you’ll agree that Secretary Kemp should resign from office, and if he won’t, he should be impeached.
The last thing Georgians should have to worry about as the holiday season begins is whether our identity has been stolen because the government released our Social Security numbers. But that’s exactly what happened.
As you are making plans for holiday shopping, will you take a moment to sign this petition demanding that Secretary Kemp step down?
It’s time to Fire Kemp!
